As the rich areas of Casablanca are more difficult to access, some recyclers prefer to collect waste from the popular neighbourhoods on the fringes of the city, particularly those with unregulated or social housing. Although these areas offer fewer recyclable materials, the bouâra (waste collectors, a word derived from the French “éboueur“) are more easily accepted by the residents, and the authorities tolerate the carts drawn by donkeys or horses. We met this bouâr just as he was returning from his round with his load of polystyrene, which will be sold as insulation for the building industry.
